Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I know if my child might benefit from occupational therapy?
Consider an OT evaluation if your child struggles with emotional regulation, sensory sensitivities, transitions, attention, frustration, body awareness, social interactions, eating, sleeping, or toileting. If these challenges interfere with daily life, OT may help. We begin with a phone intake to learn about your concerns and determine whether OT is appropriate. We may recommend other resources when needed.
2. What is sensory processing?
Sensory processing is how the brain receives and responds to information from the senses, including sights, sounds, touch, movement, and body position. Children process sensory input differently, and some may become overwhelmed or seek additional input to feel comfortable and participate in daily activities.
3. What is occupational therapy like at SP4K?
Our regulation-first approach uses individualized, play-based activities to support regulation and build skills. Sessions may include movement, sensory activities, obstacle courses, fine motor tasks, and coordination exercises. Each child has an individual sensory gym for their session, providing a dedicated 1:1 space. Therapy goals are tailored to your child’s needs, and parents receive strategies to support progress at home.
4. How long does it take to see progress?
Every child is different. Some families learn helpful strategies early in the process, while developing new skills may take more time. Therapy frequency and duration depend on your child’s needs and goals. Consistent attendance and practicing recommended strategies at home can help support progress.
5. Can OT help with school, eating, sleep, or toileting?
OT may help children develop skills that support participation in everyday activities, including learning, play, emotional regulation, dressing, eating, sleep routines, and toileting. Treatment goals are individualized based on your child’s needs. Feeding concerns may be addressed when appropriate, although we are not a specialized feeding clinic.
6. What is my role as a parent?
Parent involvement is an important part of therapy. Your therapist will share strategies to help you understand your child’s needs, navigate challenging situations, support daily routines, and practice skills at home. Recommendations are tailored to your family and your child’s goals.
7. How do we get started?
Complete the Patient Information Form on our website and email it to info@sp4kids.com. Our team will follow up with options for scheduling an intake phone call and evaluation. You can also call 303-756-0280 with questions.
Appointments are scheduled by email on a first-come, first-served basis. All new clients complete an evaluation before beginning treatment. Afterward, your therapist will review the results and proposed goals with you during a feedback session.
8. What happens during the evaluation? Can I be present?
The evaluation typically lasts about 50 minutes and may include age-appropriate activities involving fine motor skills, coordination, balance, and movement. Most children work directly with the therapist. For very young or apprehensive children, a parent may be invited to stay, with guidance from the therapist.
9. Can you use an evaluation completed by another provider?
Yes. If your child has had an evaluation within the past eight months, please send us a copy. We will review it to determine whether it includes the information needed for treatment planning and whether portions of our evaluation can be adapted.
10. Do you treat children with ADHD or autism? Can you diagnose them?
We provide occupational therapy for children with ADHD, autism, and other diagnoses. However, our providers do not diagnose ADHD or autism.
11. Do you accept insurance?
We accept Medicaid and are in-network with most commercial insurance plans, with the exception of Aetna. We can process Aetna claims as an out-of-network provider. We can also prepare an insurance benefits report to help you understand your anticipated costs. Coverage and benefits vary by plan.
12. Can I pay with a credit card, HSA, or FSA card?
Yes. We accept credit cards and eligible HSA and FSA payment cards. Families who keep a payment card on file may qualify for a discount on ongoing therapy. Please contact us for details.
13. Do you offer after-school appointments for younger children?
Children in kindergarten and younger are typically scheduled during morning or early-afternoon hours, allowing after-school appointments to be available primarily for older school-aged children. After-school availability is limited and may involve a waitlist.
14. Do you treat teenagers older than 15?
Although our services primarily focus on younger children, we may be able to accommodate older teens depending on their needs, height, weight, and the equipment required. For teens over 16, we arrange an introductory visit to help determine whether our clinic and therapy approach are a good fit. Contact us to discuss your teen’s needs.
15. Where are your clinics located?
We have three Denver metro locations in Centennial, Wheat Ridge, and Thornton. Visit our Locations page for addresses, directions, and additional information.
